I’m a huge Ravenloft fan from its early days. In always loved the gothic horror setting. The setting spoke to me. The way the sourcebooks and adventure modules read really drew me in and had me hooked. I don’t play much D&D, but I bought and read the Ravenloft sourcebooks and adventures just for their story and lore. Of course, I also devoured every novel. I remember fondly the feeling of excitement when I’d go to B. Dalton and see a new Ravenloft novel on the shelf. Over the years, I’ve re-read all of the Ravenloft stuff multiple times. It’s still as good today as it was 30+ years ago. So, naturally I was excited when I saw that Ravenloft was being reintroduced. Then I read reviews of Van Richten’s Guide To Ravenloft and was crushed by what I read. It didn’t sound at all like the Ravenloft I knew and loved. I held off on buying the book until about two days ago. And my fears and concerns, based on the reviews, were largely warranted. The new Ravenloft is a shell of its former self. So much has been changed, and not for the better. The writing is bad - even with characters that have remained largely unchanged, you get no real sense of tragedy and how they fell to evil. Sure, the text tells you’re they are evil, but you don’t get the same sense of just how evil they are or their motivations like you did with the original. A lot of what is missing from the writing is the mood and detail. Without those elements, it all feels very generic. The other problem I have is how some of the Darklords have changed. Some of the characters have been changed with no real reason or purpose other than the change itself. Some have been dumbed down so much that it robs them of what made them so cool to begin with. Then there is the issue of the almost complete overhaul to the Vistani. What made them so cool to begin with was that they were mysterious gypsies whose culture and powers are based on real world culture and folklore. I’m sadly disappointed with the new Ravenloft. It’s a softened, watered down version that does a complete disservice to the original source material.

In my opinion, the “Izzet League” and the “Simic Combine” are both the best Guilds of Ravnica to build an Artificer, especially if you use the “Rock” Gnome as your race.

The people who think Strahd is a hero who did nothing wrong and should have gotten the girl are nice guys who don't understand how Strahd's story is a trope subversion meant to draw attention to how objectifying the whole 'good guy gets the girl after winning at some sort of violence' thing is and how the 'winning at some sort of violence' bit often either is a morally bad thing in and of itself or leaves somebody ruined when they come back from it. That being said, Strahd is a yum yum, and I want him to do unspeakable things to my PC

I like the idea of a Kenku bard who has a wide variety of songs they can mimic (using minor illusion and air guitar/insert relevant instrument to sell the performance) With their arc being about how they love music and want to eventually write a song of their own. With the curse about original thoughts manifesting as a MEAN case of writers block holding them back.

yeah I never got this (I have not played DND ever so pardon me for this) do you have to pay money for the spells you get every level (you need to write them on your spellbook) or is the "pay money to scribe spells you learned" for the spells that aren't related to the ones you get every level?

My recent villain was once mortal but discovered a blood pool which they build their manor around. After drinking from it they became a Vampire and the blood made them mad and now believes the whole world should be his as well as everyone is out to get them.

Mentioning of FurAffinity was one thing that took me by surprise, but Bad-Dragon's namedrop just floored me. While I was expecting some information that others the content here was very humorous!

I finally understand the alignment more as an allegiance or affiliation towards cosmic forces. It is pretty obvious - as you mentioned - that if you use alignment as a objective judgement of a character's action and hence a player's decision you are bound for desaster sooner or later, depending how "good you align within your group" (pun intended). I was never happy with alignment until I found piece with said affiliation interpretation. There are forces of what is defined as good (wellbeing, prosperity of everyone, taking care for one another, protection the weak, etc) and evil (me, me, me, I don't care about others, heck, they shall suffer)... and forces of law (there are rules to be obeyed, structrure, construction) and forces of chaos (actions are more important than intention, freedom of choice, laws are evil as they constrict creativity, destruction). These are by no means viewpoints of mortal individuals (except for maybe some very few). Most people do not think or act along these lines. These are viewpoints of cosmic forces... thus entities for deities to demons. And characters affiliate with them.. by choice, upbringing or force. Therefore, in my viewpoint a character's alignment is definied by the patron's deity (you can even define this in a pantheon). And for a common follower the alignment must be within one step of the deities alignment, i.e. a LG Deity would be acceptable for LN and NG characters. A NE Deity would be acceptable fpr TN, LE, CE. When does a character would step out of line? When he violates the deities tenets! These define the deities alignment after all. Oh, and practitioners of divine magic must be exactly the aligment as the deity to cast spells beyond third level - thus following the tenets to the letter without deviation.

I like it when the player has to "teach" the bird words like the player who is playing it has to write down a list of words they were paying attention to that is useful for communicating that the npcs or party members said As for original thought I think of it like they watch something happen and then can do it perfectly but can't invent things on its own If someone shows the player how to make a sword they can make a sword but they also have to be taught how to use the sword I think when you play it like this it becomes very fun and has advantages and disadvantages, you can mimic anything anyone else is doing but you are cursed to need to be taught every step of the way

The young adventurers dragons and treasures book touches on different chromatic dragons mixing and how it will just be a combination of their parents features and colors.

Is this still being produced?

Geez 🙄 I think I would rather stick with D20 Future and have an actual sci-fi game. This sounds like we want pathfinder in space but we don’t want pathfinder 😉 😉 in Space so we’ll tweak the rules and say it’s waaaaaay in the future. I would have been actually happier if they had left the rules alone and just made PATHFINDER IN SPAAAAAAACE!!!

A lot of these points are based on modern D&D (3rd-5E) whereas Old School or OSR has a lot of the difference that some.of these other games have like difficult combat and political intrigue. However it is also good for people to play other games, it is annoying how hard it is to get anyone to play anything other than 5E. Also Moldvay Basic/Expert is the best edition of D&D and also the best RPG.

i am currently running this adventure and i make no qualms about drawing heavily from the novel Dracula. My party had left the village of Barovia and the vistani camp, had a run in with some of Strahds minions ont he bridge over the waterfall and they set up camp. In the night Strahd showed up in the form of a huge black wolf, He welcomed the party to his land and apologised for his minions agression, then he said that the people of the village of barovia had shown defiance by helping the party so that night, the village of Barovia was decimated and the party could do nothing,except hearing the alarming church bell and faint screams. when they eventually arrive at the castle i will have villagers impaled on wodden poles

the book states in the forword that Strahd was made as a response to people writting vampire romance novels. he is a immortal serial killer who hunts women ( and handsome men in CoS) The man is an entitled brat who could not fathom not getting what he wanted and decided it was everyone elses fault and not his.
